About The Pub Landlord Advisor Team

The Pub Landlord Advisor came about after a discussion between Dermot and his Father, Tom Kilroy. Tom was lamenting the decline of the pub industry and how the breweries didn’t seem to be helping the situation. Tom is a firm believer that you can run a successful pub in any economic climate if you get a few key factors right.

After this discussion Dermot started to do some online research. He soon discovered that there wasn’t an existing service that offered great quality, INDEPENDENT and practical advice on running a pub.

The websites that were offering advice all seemed to have a vested interest in getting you to run a pub their way…

which is not necessarily the best way!

And so, The Pub Landlord Advisor was born. As luck would have it, at a weekend festival, Dermot met Mel Dixon in the beer tent, of all places.

It turned out Mel is a writer of online content. Best of all, Mel had also worked as a roaming bartender. They got talking about the lack of independent advice tailored to busy pub landlords.

Mel joined the team, and we’ve been writing practical tips to give you the best chance of succeeding ever since.

Meet the team

Dermot has been working in internet technologies, mainly developing websites for the past 10 years. Because of this Dermot gained deep insights into the traits of successful online organisations. What he noticed was, online success is not that different to successfully running a pub. Offering a great customer experience underpinned by proven repeatable ways of publicising this service.

Before that he followed in the family footsteps running pubs and nightclubs. Dermot fully understands the realities of the busy pub landlord. It’s a tough job, but a rewarding one, if you get it right.

That is why Dermot is determined to put a magnifying glass on the pub trade, so that landlords new and existing have a chance of getting it right.


Mel is a professional writer who has also worked as a bartender, supervisor and recruitment consultant within the hospitality industry. He knows all about great service, bad service and the varying degrees of mediocrity in between.

As a writer, Mel has experience of working with new start-ups as well as more established companies. His specialities include: public relations, small business matters, and accountancy and tax issues.

He has a passion for producing shrewd and insightful content which is easy to digest for readers. Accessibility is at the heart of everything he writes.

Tom and Mary
The Pub Landlord Advisor experts. Tom and Mary have been running pubs for the past 40 years. They still run pubs in and around the Bedfordshire area.

According to Tom there are a few key factors to successfully running a pub. Customer service is right up there at the top of the tree.
